The Contract Furniture Tooling Dilemma
Developing commercial seating collections for the contract and hospitality market is inherently complex. Clients demand infinite versatility: armchairs, 2-seater and 3-seater sofas, integrated charging side tables, and extended corner lounge configurations. Traditionally, furniture brands manufacture separate welded tubular subframes for every SKU in the catalog.
This traditional approach carries heavy financial and logistical liabilities:
- Dozens of dedicated welding jigs and staging fixtures.
- High minimum order quantities (MOQs) for specialized frame components.
- Cumbersome warehouse storage for bulky pre-welded metal skeletons.
The Monolithic Extrusion Architecture
To overcome this fragmentation during the development of the Lilin collection, our studio engineered a single, heavy-duty aluminum extrusion profile (6063-T6 alloy) that serves as the universal structural spine for the entire range.
The custom extrusion profile incorporates several integrated geometric channels:
- Continuous T-Slots for Sliding Connectors: Internal T-track channels allow cast legs, structural backrest supports, and side tables to slide and lock anywhere along the perimeter using blind wedge fasteners.
- Integrated Wiring Conduit & Heat Dissipation: The hollow central chamber routes power and data cables for hospitality charging hubs while dissipating thermal load.
- Infinite Linear Scalability: The factory simply cuts the master extruded profile to specific millimetric lengths — from an 800mm armchair base to a 10-meter modular airport lounge bench — using standard CNC miter saws.
Financial and Operational Results
By concentrating CAPEX investment into a single high-precision extrusion die rather than multiple welding fixtures, the production metrics achieved extraordinary efficiency:
- 70% Reduction in Tooling CAPEX: Amortizing one extrusion die across the entire catalog protected working capital during initial production.
- Compact Flat-Pack Shipping: Sub-assemblies ship disassembled in dense linear cartons, cutting transatlantic freight costs by 45%.
- Rapid On-Site Assembly: Standardized sliding connectors cut field installation times in hotel lobbies by over half.
Strategic DFM Rule
True modular design is not about multiplying specialized parts. It is about engineering a single master component that does all the structural heavy lifting.
