Core focus: Bridging design intent with industrial reality. Turning complex visions into scalable products. Structuring value for ambitious manufacturing brands.
A dynamic light sculpture designed to transform a static material constraint into an interactive optical instrument. I engineered a hinge system that allows the user to physically shape the light, bridging the gap between solid architecture and intangible atmosphere.
Client: UpGroup
Type: Lighting Design / Floor Lamp
Key Feature: Adjustable Mirror Mechanism
Materials: Calacatta Marble Base, Polished/Brushed Steel
Production: Handmade
The Brief: Kinetic Stone
Working with marble usually implies dealing with static, monumental forms. The challenge was to create a dynamic object that retained the prestige of stone but offered genuine user interaction. I wanted to move beyond the traditional “lamp with a shade.” My goal was to design a system where the light source itself was hidden, forcing the material—specifically the steel shield—to become the active protagonist in diffusing the light.
I stripped the lamp down to two essential components: the Gravity Base and the Reflective Shield. The design centers on a custom-engineered friction hinge that holds the steel mirror at any angle. This mechanism transforms the user into a lighting director: tilting the shield changes the beam from a focused “spotlight” (direct reflection) to a soft, ambient glow (diffused reflection). By embedding the LED source deep within the marble base, I eliminated glare and focused all attention on the dialogue between the raw stone and the precision-machined steel.
Sculptural Functionality: A product that commands attention even when switched off, serving as a piece of art for high-end interiors.
Interactive Value: The tactile engagement with the steel shield creates a physical connection between the user and the object.
Material Authority: The contrast between heavy Calacatta marble and thin steel reinforces the brand’s expertise in handling complex material pairings.
